Physicians For Physicians Retreat 2020

We, Colin and Sara, have been craving two things for a long time: 1) some progress in the burnout crisis, with appreciable changes and solutions and 2) an opportunity to bring together parts of our community in person, offline. So this retreat combines these two desires. If burnout has been, or currently is, a part of your life, either directly or indirectly, then you may be interested in joining us for a retreat in 2020. We're both passionate about the pursuit of supporting physicians throughout their burnout experience. Colin experienced burnout first hand over the course of years in a busy group practice and knew the causes were system-driven, and that ultimately, it was an unsustainable environment for him. Sara supported Colin throughout this experience and dedicated significant time and energy into exploring everything related to burnout. They've delivered talks and published articles on the topic and aren't satisfied that individual physicians are still living with life altering burnout.  One such talk we were a part of involved approximately 75 physicians and medical trainees and it was clear that they all had a story to tell and wanted to share it with a group that understood what they were going through or had gone through. Shared experiences are undeniably valuable. So we've decided that one more step forward in supporting physician colleagues is to go all in and host a retreat - one that really aligns with all that we know and have learned about burnout.

What you won’t find at the retreat:

  • yoga or mindfulness sessions (although we do believe in both of them for our overall well-being - it just isn’t that kind of retreat)

  • a line up of expensive speakers

  • a ridiculous money making price tag for our benefit (we’ve never been about that)

What you will find at the retreat:

  • burnout sharing & brainstorming personal solutions

  • a clearer idea of personal values and life vision

  • time to be in nature in a beautiful setting

  • a supportive environment that understands the culture of medicine and systems we work in that drive burnout

Overall goals of the retreat:

  • a connection with yourself, nature and the people at the retreat

  • a supportive community after the retreat is over

  • a feeling of empowerment and revitalization

  • an opportunity to feel vulnerable in a safe place with people who “get it”

Who is the retreat ideal for?

  • a physician, in practice or not, or a resident, that is looking for a chance to reconnect with themselves, and other like-minded physicians, after experiencing burnout

  • you, if you're looking for a get-away from your usual environment that allows you to focus on your own desires and personhood after experiencing system-driven burnout

  • non-medical spouses are certainly welcome to join you for the experience outside of the formal burnout sessions

Who is the retreat not ideal for?

  • anyone looking to earn CME

  • someone who considers medicine to be a stress-free environment to work in and can’t relate to the concept of system-driven burnout.

The dates we're considering right now include the following two weekends:

  • May 1 to 3, 2020

  • June 5 to 7, 2020

We're hoping to hold the retreat at the Brentwood Bay Resort & Spa which is located in Brentwood Bay just outside of beautiful Victoria, BC. If you’re travelling from out of town, Victoria is a very popular tourist destination and has so much to offer its visitors.

We're limiting the retreat to 20 attendees so that we can create an experience that best serves the needs and wants of all participants. If you're interested, please send us an e-mail with the subject line "Retreat" so we can send you updates.

We would love the chance to meet you in person!
